30 Before 30 – How Did I Do?

30 Before 30 – How Did I Do?

30 Before 30 - How Did I Do? cover

So you may remember around a year ago I did a post ‘30 before 30‘ – a list of 30 things I wanted to achieve before I turned 30 this year. I then did a little update about 6 months ago (30 before 30 – the update) to see how I was getting on. Well earlier this month, I turned the big 3-0 so thought it was about time for this post! So here is 30 before 30 – how did I do?

1. Volunteer

Just like 6 months ago, I unfortunately haven’t got round to doing any volunteering. Life has just been so crazy busy, I just haven’t had a spare moment to myself. I will make sure I do do it at some point in the not too distant future though.

2. Buy a camera and learn some photography skills

So you may remember that 6 months ago, I had purchased the camera! But, I’m still yet to really experiment with it. I used it for a blog post (this one) and just didn’t find it to work as well as my iPhone does at taking quick photos if I’m honest! However, I think I need to give the camera a bit more of a chance and really take the time to work out its functions and how exactly it works best. I would like to think my photography skills are improving slowly but surely, but think it would be really handy to do a course when I get the chance.

3. Learn calligraphy and create awesome art work

In my update, I said I had been working on this. Unfortunately, since then I haven’t really done much! I was going to attempt to make some Christmas gifts but this just never happened. Again, I hope I get chance soon to do some more work on my calligraphy skills and start to progress a but with it.

4. Re-learn how to knit and make something

So, I haven’t actually worked on this. Uh-oh, this post is starting to show a pattern in that I haven’t done much, oops! I have spotted a few things online, such as trying a pattern from Wool and the Gang, but just haven’t got round to it yet. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy one, and that should hopefully make me get started!

5. Visit a new country

So I’ve not had chance to visit a new country since writing the update. I was actually hoping to get abroad for my 30th, but due to some constraints (more about this later), the Hubster and I ended up getting away for a few days in England instead. Hopefully our next big holiday could be somewhere that we haven’t travelled to before.

6. Have a social media break

So yep, still haven’t done this! I guess I’m still scared to let go incase the momentum of this blog growth slows down and I regret it. But at the same time, a week out probably won’t make that much difference?! I don’t know! To be fair though, I could probably do with it to mentally switch off.

7. Get a tattoo

So this absolutely hasn’t happened, and that is for medical reasons that I will go onto in my next point.

8. Start a family

Yeah, so this totally happened…well pretty much! If you are a friend/regular blog reader/social media follower/see me in the street then you will know I am currently pregnant! I think I was pregnant when I wrote the update actually but didn’t know at that point. I had a feeling I may be pregnant for my big birthday and I was right! So that has meant many things on this list have taken a back seat – through feeling rough, tiredness, not enough hours in the day etc. However, I am hoping that whilst on maternity leave I will be able to work through a few things on this list, obviously as well as looking after a newborn! Our baby girl is due in June and the Hubster and I couldn’t be happier. It is the proudest and most important thing on this list I have achieved as you can imagine!

9. Complete a random acts of kindness list

Yeah still haven’t done this either! I just need to get myself organised and find a good list that I can follow. As I said before, I would like to think I’m quite a kind person anyway, but it would be nice to complete a little task.

10. Take a cooking course

Similarly to 6 months ago, I do feel like I cook a lot more than I used to. I mean, the meals I do are generally quite simple and straightforward, but at least I’m trying! I want to make sure that when my baby is old enough, I give her good, healthy, tasty food so definitely want to continue to develop my cooking skills.

11. Use my Polaroid camera

I decided I was going to wait until the baby arrives to use it, hopefully to catch some magical memories!

12. Donate to a charity shop

So, this is actually something I have been doing! I have donated quite a bit to the charity shop I was working with for the post for my charity shop haul and hope to continue to do so. We are obviously having quite a sort out in our house to make space for our new addition, so anything that is still in good nick gets sent to the charity shop.

13. De-clutter

So I still haven’t read the book first mentioned, but I have been de-cluttering as much as poss as mentioned in the previous point. It makes me feel so much better afterwards, it’s just a case of having the time at the mo.

14. Try a new food

So I’ve obviously gotta be careful about foods I eat at the moment and if they are safe. But thinking about it, I have probably tried foods I may not have normally through receiving my Degustabox each month. It’s such a fun thing to do and I love seeing what is in my new box. If you are intrigued and want to know a bit more, you can check out my most recent review and I even treat you to a cheeky discount code in the post!

15. Write a letter to myself to open in 10 years

So I didn’t end up doing this just before my birthday. But it is something I can do relatively easily if I dedicate a bit of time to do so. It’s such a weird thought to picture how different my life could be in a decades time.

16. Visit more places in the UK

So I’ve visited a couple of places in the UK since writing my update, in particular for my birthday. It is something I hope to continue to do, especially once the little one arrives. Travel for us though is usually limited by time and money so we will just have to wait and see.

17. Do something that really scares me

So I said in my update that I had something in the pipeline…but I can’t actually remember what that was! I guess the changes that are happening in the not too distant future are a little scary, but more exciting than anything. Plus, I am determined not to feel scared about giving birth and am trying to do as much prep as poss to help with this, including looking into hypnobirth.

18. Research family history

Yep, so still haven’t done this, basically because of time constraints. But it will happen at some point in the future!

19. Learn how to do make up

Yeah, so I’m still not great at this, but just rolling with the techniques I have and hoping for the best! I got some vouchers for my birthday so thought I might treat myself to pricier make up than I would normally go for from a department store. I might even have a little make over before hand to see what suits me and what they would recommend.

20. Host events at home

So since October, we haven’t really done this. But I’m sure once bubba comes along we more than likely will.

21. Earn money from blogging

Again, just like 6 months ago I have done a few paid posts which has been good. I have continued to be sent some fab free stuff, but at the same time have limited this slightly as was feeling a tad overwhelmed with all the products I had agreed to review. I’m hoping to be able to earn more money from blogging whilst I’m off on maternity leave as that will obviously be a big help. I will just have to see how it goes.

22. Watch more films

I’m sure I have seen a few films since writing the original post, but not a massive amount. Perhaps when I’m off, me and my girl could watch a few new ones!

23. Celebrate all of the holidays

We did celebrate Christmas this year, and it was a pretty exciting one as it was around the time that we announced to the world that we were expecting. We never majorly celebrate the rest of the holidays throughout the year, but I guess that will change once the baby is here and starts to get bigger.

24. Learn how to meditate properly

I haven’t really done this, but definitely want to look into it sooner rather than later as am feeling quite stressed at the mo and think it would really help. I’m sure there are great apps and YouTube vids that can help, so I just need to have a good look.

25. Do a 30 day challenge

I’m still yet to do this! Like the kindness challenge, I just need to make sure I get organised, find one I like, and simply get started!

26. Learn how to make awesome videos and develop my YouTube channel

So I think I recorded a video around 6 months ago for YouTube channel and never actually uploaded it – whyyyyy?!!!! It is definitely something I want to do, but the fear is just putting me off. I mean, recording it, I’m actually ok. It’s just I don’t have a clue where to start when it comes to editing. Perhaps when I’m on maternity leave I could really have a good go at it when I get the chance. Maybe I might do some baby related videos as I know how helpful they have been to me over the past few months. It might be a new direction I go with as my life changes.

27. Beat my anxiety

I feel like I have continued to make progress in working on my anxiety and am pretty pleased about that. I’m conscious my baby picks up on my feelings and emotions and would hate for her to be an anxious child. Therefore I want to do as much as I can to avoid this.

28. See a show at the theatre

So my momma and I are yet to go, but I did tell her I would treat her to a performance as her birthday present. So we basically just need to get it booked up!

29. Do karaoke

This still hasn’t happened! I don’t think I could ever actually do it sober (which is what I obviously have been for the past 6-7 months), so maybe post-baby this might just happen!

30. Plan my 30th birthday party

So this one HAD to happen! Rather than the party I would normally have had for a big birthday, this one was a lot more chilled out. I hired out part of my local Boston Tea Party cafe and decorated it with pretty balloons and tassels. Lots of my family and friends were able to come celebrate with me, and we all had a really lovely time. Let me know if you’d like me to do a little post about my party as that would be fun to share.

So this was how I did! I’m well aware that I didn’t tick half as many things off my list that I would have liked to have, but a little something has got in the way over the past few months! As mentioned in lots of different points, I’m hoping to achieve many of the things in the not too distant future, perhaps even when I’m off work on maternity leave. I think I also need reminding of lots of the points, as it isn’t until I refresh myself with these posts that I actually remember what is on them!

So this was my 30 before 30. Have you ever done anything like this before a big birthday? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time…

Jean xoxo

  1. I’ve been doing a mini social media break each day – I’m not allowed my phone at all after 8pm so I put it on charge in the bedroom. I didn’t think it would make much difference but I’m sleeping much better and I’m happier ? I listened to a podcast recently and they were talking about the amount of information we are constantly bombarding ourselves with by looking at our phones all the time. They also said that it makes you stop concentrating on yourself and makes your life centered on what others are doing. I’m more productive without it too!! xxx

    1. This sounds like such a great idea! I’m glad it’s working so well for you ? think I’ll have to give it a go too xx

  2. I actually had somewhat of a social media break a few weeks ago and while it was scary, it was nice to not check my notifications every five seconds. I also like the idea of writing a letter and opening it in 10 years time. Can you imagine how different things will be in 10 years time?

  3. Nice list of goals you have. If I were to choose one from your list, I would want to do the “write a letter to myself to open in 10 years.” We cannot remember everything that has happened in detail, so writing it down, and documenting the hardships, the lessons learned, the little joys and triumphs for my future self to remember would be a reminder for me that life has been good.

  4. So happy for you that you have achieved all these things! And congratulations on your pregnancy! 😀 You sure have done a lot of good in this world before your reached 30 😀
