So it is that time again! In fact, I’m pretty darn late to the party, I meant to post this waaaay back. You’ve probably noticed I’ve been pretty quiet over on my blog and across my social media and that is because I’ve not been feeling too well recently. That has meant that food tasting has had to take a bit of a back seat. But things are on the up, so I wanted to let you know what I thought of the October box’s contents*. And I’ve already got my hands on the November box so that review will be up before you know it too. If you fancy reading my previous reviews they can be found here: August & September. So here folks, is my Degustabox October Review…
So here is the box, this has to be my favourite moment. The anticipation of finding out what goodies are going to be inside!
And this was what was inside! As you can see, a great selection.
And here are the contents all laid out. I couldn’t wait to get started on the goodies!
As with every box, here is the information sheet which I always find super useful to have to refer to.
Again, like usual, a recipe is included in the box featuring one of the products. Going with the Halloween theme this month, it’s a spiced shepherd’s pie including the LoSalt from the box.
These were the other leaflets included inside the box. Again, I find them quite handy as the often offer extra info on the products, different flavours of the items, and where I can repurchase them if I want to.
Lets get onto the review…
HIPPEAS Organic Chickpea Puffs
So I must be honest, I was a bit unsure about trying these. I thought they might not quite be to my taste and might be a bit too ‘healthy’ tasting. However, of course I gave them a go and was pleasantly surprised! They were really tasty and quite moreish. Plus, it was a really decent sized sharing type bag. They’re high in fibre and protein and don’t have very many calories so are definitely a good snack choice. I would buy these again given the chance.
(Free gift sample 75g – 350g tub RRP £1.75)
So this is salt. Not much more to say really! I don’t tend to have a lot of salt apart from on chips/wedges/curly fries etc. This one contains less sodium but still seems to taste the same as normal salt, so it’s a winner! I think it is great to be able to use a healthy alternative, so I will look out for this when I run out of salt next.
Cirio (a brand under Valfrutta)
So I’m not going to lie, I had to get Google translate out when checking out this product! Obviously I could work out how to cook it, but when wanting to find out a bit more about the product, I had to get online. That is because this product is very new to the UK. It is soon to be in new packaging, so when you see it next, it’ll probably look a bit different. I received basmati rice and lentils and it was a really tasty Mediterranean dish. Other flavours they do include: Cous cous with mixed vegetables; Bulgar, quinoa, red rice, tomatoes and green olives; Spelt with black olives, dried tomatoes and capers. As I mentioned in my September Review, I find it so convenient to cook rice in a pouch, so was happy to get this in my box this month. It is a quick and easy way to make up a meal.
Hienz No Added Sugar Hoops
Growing up in the 90s, this product is such a memory of my childhood! Hoops on toast or with chips and nuggets, I used to love them. Needless to say I was pleased to see them in the box. This tin did me 2 servings and is such good value at 75p. I think it’s a really handy option to have in the house as children love them, as do adults! Plus, with no added sugar, and equating to one of your five a day, it is a healthier option too. I would happily repurchase it.
Nuttvia Breadsticks Snackpack
Nom, this product was right up my street! I remember when I was younger having similar chocolate and bread stick dipping snacks, so I was pleased to see this one. The chocolatey-hazelnut dip was tasty and worked well with the bread sticks. The only thing I found was that I had too much sauce left over at the end! I clearly hadn’t dipped enough with the bread sticks I was using. I will definitely look out for this again when I’m looking for something sweet.
Lee Kum Kee – Sauce for Tomato Garlic Prawns and Sauce for Honey Garlic Spare Ribs
RRP 2 X £0.85
So I was sent 2 sauces from this range as well as some sweet soy sauce. I’ll briefly talk about them individually.
So the first sachet was for tomato garlic prawns. I’m a big fan of prawns to was keen to try this. The ingredients in this sauce were tomato, chilli peppers, honey and garlic. The sachet included how best to use this sauce which I though was helpful. I really enjoyed this dish, and found it really tasty. I know prawns aren’t for everyone though so this sauce can also be used for cooking with meats such as chicken and pork as well as vegetables. Therefore it is quite versatile and handy to have in the cupboard.
The second sachet was a sauce for honey garlic spare ribs. I’m not going to lie, I’m not big on eating meat on the bone, so spare ribs aren’t often something I go for. However, my Hubster is a fan, so I thought I would give this recipe a go. And I actually really enjoyed it! Flavoured with honey and garlic, like the prawns it was a nice combination. This sauce can also be used in stir fries, as a marinade and also as a sauce mix. I probably preferred the other sachet, but would happily repurchase them both.
This soy sauce was a little extra inside the box. I’m afraid we haven’t got round to trying it yet but I’m sure it’ll taste great!
Feel Good Drinks Water Infusions
RRP 2 X £1.20
So I got 2 different flavours of this water from Feel Good Drinks. These drinks are made from 100% natural ingredients, combining water, fruit and natural flavourings. There are 3 flavours available, and the ones I got were: Infusions – Strawberry and Mint, and Refreshingly Still – Orange, Mango and Water.
So you can see from the info, that there are very few ingredients in this drink, and it only contains 20 calories a bottle. The flavour combination of this might seem a little random, but I really liked it – it reminded me of a mojito but obviously without the alcohol! It was really refreshing and not too OTT.
This second drink as you can see contains lots of different fruits in its ingredients. It has more calories than the previous drink, being around 120 cals. However, that is barely anything to some fizzy drinks on the market! Again, a refreshing and fruity drink. Because it is a flavoured water, the taste isn’t too overpowering, but it is still nice.
I enjoyed both of these drinks and would happily repurchase either of them if I spotted them in a shop. I’m always on the look out to alternatives to fizzy drinks.
Vimto Millions Gift Jar
So this jar is two of my favourite things as a child combined – Millions and Vimto! I used to love Millions sweets in all of it’s varieties of flavours growing up, and how you could really taste them with each chew. And Vimto was a popular drink in our household back in the day. The combination of these 2 seem to really work well together. They were included in the box as a Halloween treat, but because the jar is such a decent size and the sweets last, we are still enjoying them now! They do also come in smaller formats if this is too much for you to handle. I would happily repurchase these as a treat.
Kabuto Noodles Thai Green Chicken Curry
I’ve probably mentioned this before, but I love noodles. In any variety really, but I definitely appreciate it when they are as quick as this one to do! You literally fill the pot with boiling water, wait a few minutes for it to work its magic, give them a stir, then enjoy. They’re gluten-free as well as containing no additives or preservatives, so are much better for you than some other noodle alternatives on the market. I must say, I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to spices, and found this a little over powering. I’m sure for anyone else though it would be fine! I would quite like to try any other flavours they may do. I also really like the packaging of these noodles, and the humour behind some of the wording.
Pip’s Real Hot Chocolate Co Real Hot Chocolate Coins
You all know I’m a chocoholic, especially in the hot drink form, so I was very excited to see this one! You literally combine it with hot milk and voila – a yummy hot chocolate! I was sent the chocolate orange flavour but it also comes as a classic hot chocolate. It is a single serving of hot chocolate, so is very much a treat. I think it is lovely to give as a gift perhaps, or just a nice way to spend a bit of time on yourself, savouring the chocolatey taste. They’re nut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free, plus there’s even the option to have ones containing no added sugar. I would definitely like to have this again.
Pulsin Kids’ Fruity Oat Bars Orange Choc Chip
Again with the orange and chocolate! I reckon whoever made up my box must have known my weakness! This bar was full of oats, real fruit and plenty of other natural ingredients. It is gluten-free and dairy-free, as well as being one of your 5 a day. These bars are great for kids as they contain a lot less sugar than the average kids’ fruit snack, but are perfect for adults too! Plus, how cute is this packaging? I really liked this fruity bar and would definitely like another one in the future.
Pechkets Misfortune Cookies
Another Halloween treat in the box, this time in the form of a black fortune cookie! I found it a tad random, but as fortune cookies go it was nice enough. I think it is quite fun to give someone as a gift but I’m not sure I would repurchase it for myself.
Michel et Augustin Super Cookies
The final item inside my box were these oversized cookies that had a melty middle! They were filled with big chocolate chips and real hazelnuts. I enjoyed these bad boys with a nice cuppa tea and they didn’t disappoint. Probably not the healthiest thing to enjoy, but my word they were worth it. I would definitely like to have them again.
Themes Inside the Box
So this was the first month I noticed some themes inside the box. I mean, each box tends to have an overall theme such as ‘Back to School’ or ‘Halloween’. However, this box seemed to contain a few items that I would put together – chocolate items and Chinese-style items.
So I was happy to see all of the chocolate in this box! Obviously too much to be enjoyed at once, I appreciated the chocolatey treats inside this month.
This box also felt quite ‘Chinese-y’ in terms of cuisine. Of all my fave take-away options, Chinese is usually top of my list. Therefore I was happy to get these items.
So this was October’s Degustabox, what do you think? Would you like to try any of the items, or are you already a fan of some of them? Let me know in the comments!
If you use the code ‘UNW4A’ you can get £7 off your first order.
Until next time…
*I was very kindly sent this box free of charge in exchange of a review. However, all opinions are my own and I would never share something I didn’t love with you. Please note that if you go on to get a Degustabox, its contents might vary slightly from mine.
